The Elder Gods.

David and Leigh Eddings introduce readers to their newly minted Land of Dhrall with The Elder Gods, the first book in the four-book Dreamers Saga. Dhrall is under the gentle rule of four gods representing the four compass points. These gods are reaching the end of their terms of power when the god of the North brings four children who are destined to take over for them into his siblings' lairs. The children are dreamers and able to see the possible outcome of battles in a coming war with the evil creature that controls the wasteland at the center of Drahll's map. Thus, the gods and their young charges undertake quests to hire mercenary armies and thwart the initial invasion into their lands.

Every book David writes is almost the same as the last. This story-line is a little thin

As fantastic as the first and second series of David Eddings was, the first of the Elder Gods series is slightly disappointing. The characters are extremely predictable: the presence of a goddess disguised as a young girl currying favours with kisses and hugs, the warrior type, etc. He is such a good writer with a very enjoyable, easy-to-read style, yet has limited imagination...

Hey i thought it was pretty good, i liked the whole god theme. or maybe it was because this was my first fantasy book i have read. But if it made me read more fantasy books, then its done its purpose.

Very good book. I really enjoyed it. Sucked me in from the get go.

This series reminds me of Native American stories when Tribes warred and consulted with other tibes. Lets hope the other books live up to the Eddings reputation.

I read that DE is purposely writing the books from a variety of characters' perspectives. Interesting idea, but I read the whole book and didn't become attached to any one character. There is no Garion or Sparhawk to root for as the work through the ""problem.""

PatrickBirmingham, AL4.02004-12-08 09:57:15
It was a decent book. Definately not his best. I hope the second one gets better.

It was nice to get back into a simple fantasy without having to get lost in detail

A great read, but I must admit it's sort of lagging behind the other series. I like the gods better in this one I guess, but every character is the same; all witty, all sly, all thingking exactly the same way about exactly the same things; eg. ""Get my line of thought"" or a similar comment is repeated about twice in every chapter... But your books always do suck in in from the start... Congrats and good luck with the other books. (The Treasured One wasn't as good as the first one...)

Brilliant read....I hope the next books are as good, but someone said the second one wasn't as good. I didn't fully appreciate The Elder Gods...hmm

I am a big fan of his work.. but was a little let down by this book was hoping for more. Maybe next one will be better.

I haven't read any fantasy books before so dont really have anything to compare it with except LOTR, and theres no comparisons there. A fairly good book that got my intrested in more eddings material.

Honestly This is fantastic. I do not typically post to this sort of forum I like to critique, I think it helps people grow. Although, this was just awesome. The whole premise of such diverse cultures coming together for a common purpose and finding they are so similar. I love the different styles you see from each perspective. I am almost through with the second and waiting impatiently for the third book.

I'm an Eddings addict with no life so even thought the plot seems like a rehash of all the other series its enjoy able.

ChrisTX3.52005-03-12 19:10:45
Seems like he forced this book so that it could get to print. The Belgariad and the Mallorean.....Now those are masterpieces...

Sydney 5.02005-03-19 14:33:11
This series is incredibly awesome and I hope you continue writing fantasy. (i own ""The Belgaraid Series"", ""The Mallorean Series"", ""Belgarath the Sorcerer"", ""Polgara the Sorceress"", Book 1, and book 2 of the dreamers and i'm really looking forward to reading book 3 and 4, the tamuli, and the eluinum (or eluminum or whatever that series is called)

DaisyMinnesota5.02005-03-22 22:10:56
I thought it was really good I like the way they write. It looks like I'm going to be sucked in to another series, waiting impatiently for the next one to come out.

First book i have read from these authors. Good story. Gods are good except Arcacia (a little annoying). I've been taken in and will read other books they have written!!!

If anyone knows could they let me know thanks. note to DE&LE I have every book that you have written too date and am eagerly awaiting the rest of the Dreamer series just to say great reading and lots of love to you both from one of your biggest fans my mum being the other.

Once again the duo are up to their usual exceptional selves. However, their characters do seem to be rehashed from previous books.

First Eddings book i have ever read, i am hooked by this excellent novel. Love Rabbit

I've read & own all of his books to date except his non fantasy ones; excluding Regina's Song. I really love his work & was amazed to see 2 new novels out. I liked both books to the Dreamer's series, but there was some likeness to his other series of Garion & Sparhawk. In some ways its to be expected. The same thing occurs in almost every Stephen King book I've read & I really like both authors. Keep writing good books!!!

GruntUK1.02005-07-22 14:04:01
This series gets worse & worse. I've just forced my way through the 3rd in the series and I won't bother with the 4th. The stories in each book are the same - Get to gether an army to defend a corner of the countyy against invasion from the bug-people - build defences, fight the bugs a bit - and a mysterious (not) super-god steps in and defeaths the entire bug army at a single stroke. Most of the 3rd book consists of characters telling each other what happened in the 1st & 2nd books - and what's happened already in the 3rd book - 4 or 5 times in some cases. It's difficult to tell the characters apart - they all seem to have the same irritating characteristics - supercilious, smug & coy. I know David now says that Leigh has always contributed to his books, but I get the impression she's just about writing them by herself now.

GruntUK5.02005-07-23 07:52:51
Isn't it sad, how we come to rely on aways having a spell-checker? together together together defeats defeats defeats

LoraGeorgia4.52005-08-22 05:43:53
I kind of got the impression that these stories are more about the people breaking down their collective barriers and learning that in spite of their differences, they can work together toward a single goal. I mean, this is just my opinion, but the Gods seem to be rather interesting in their lack of omniscience(sp) and seeming humanity. Other than some the rather annoying little habits of turn of phrase by the authors, all in all it was an interesting play on human spirit in all its manifestations.

Siri Norway1.02005-11-08 04:44:03
I have read all other Eddings, and I could not wait for this one... What a major let down!!! All the people in the books say the same, the plot is way to predictibal, but the worst part is that there is no real sens of dangder. Yiou never really belive that the good guys will loose, because the bad guys are just too stupid, hey, they are almost as stupid as the good ones!!! I had too force myself too read this thru, witch i never thouth i would do with an Eddings book. I really miss the greadness of the BELGARIAD/MALLOREAN and of the Sparhawk stories!Only reason I dont give it a zero, is that it is a Eddings
