Sparhawk, Pandion Knight and Queen's Champion, returned to Elenia after ten years of exile, only to find his young Queen Ehlana trapped in a block of ensorcelled crystal.  Only the great sorcery of Sepherina, ageless instructor of magic, kept her alive - but the spell would last only a year, and its cost was tragically high.

Now a Prince Regent ruled Elenia, the puppet of Annias, ambitious Primate of the Church who planned to seize power over all the land.

As Sparhawk and Sepherina set out to find a cure for Ehlana, Sephrenia revealed that there was only one person in the west who could defeat the evil plots against Ehlana.  That person was Sparhawk.

A little hard to get into the main character at the beginning. After getting past the first few chapters, it began to fly. The end came too soon!

A decent intro to a decent series.

The style is superb. You feel so close with the charackters. They seem just like any of us, while some of them are heroic. But this heroism is not a fantastical heroism. Despite they are less (and of course worthy) in our own real world, indeed hereos exist. Kalten, Ulath are not men like a superman. But they are worthy men. Though Eddings never mention sentences like ""the mighty Sparhawk"", ""the brave Ulath"", you feel that they are legendary in Eddings's own uniqe joyful style. And the world is realistic about the relationships. You can never find pedophilliacs, prostitudes, bastards in a middle earth. But here there are. It means, there is ""real evil"" in this world. It always seemed to me funny that a guy wakes up each morning and thinks how to invade the world and to get more and more power. So childish, though in our world such people live (like Hitler maybe:) But there is a real evil which can poison our deeds in a daily life. Such as to lie, to cheat, to blackmail... Let there be an evil man who worship money or women... Once let there be an evil woman, who is evil cause she likes enthriqa and fucks with people for that. And once let the evil deeds and mistakes exists in hereos pasts. When the evil is so real, i feel the hereos are so real as well. Thank you Eddings cause you let me to like not only the fantasy fiction, but also the ""fiction"" itself..:)

The story flows so well you don't even realise how much you've read. It's a fantastic fantasy but it has a stark reality to it that just seems to stick with you. The depravity of the characters and the flaws so openly seen in even the most heroic or untouchable of characters gives the story a unique quality that allows the reader to connect with Eddings' world and the people in it, it has a realness to it, an authenticity of the world we live in, it has the harsh truths we face in every day life. Human vice is extremely well displayed in Eddings's masterful works, and he leaves no character untouched, becuase as we know in the real world there is no such thing as perfect, only opinion. His style of writing is so easy to read, and the depth and sincerity he gives to his characters is so powerful it draws you in to no end.

I was so delighted to see another series, and this one just got better and better. I love all the characters and was very sad when I finished the last one. The comedy has always been one of the things I love about these books (except when I laugh out loud on the bus!!) and once again the Edding's have out done themselves!!!

I absolutely loved it! The comic relief is what really got me hooked, especially Talen's antics. I have also read The Ruby Knight and look forward to reading the rest of Sparhawk's adventures. Wonderful book, eh!
